Movement
Elastanes are synthetic materials which have similar properties to elastic
rubber. They show elastic recovery from very high extensions. The fibre
often consists of a polyurethane block copolymer in which the molecules
have a highly coiled structure. Other materials have highly elastic properties,e.g.
special polyesters such as polybutylene terephthalate. These materials
are used in swimwear, support garments such as athletics garments, skiwear,
leotards and increasingly in comfort stretch general clothing. Garments
constructed from elastanes give good shape retention and muscular support.
Although elastanes may be used bare, they are often covered with a non-elastic
yarn.
In reality the design of garments or other items of equipment has a highly
significant effect on mobility.
