Multi-layer fabrics
Fabrics may be combined together, or with polymer films, to produce materials
with a combination of properties. A strong fabric could be bonded to a weak
material to produce a harder wearing product with increased functionality,
for example a woven fabric and a breathable membrane or insulating layer.
Woven or warp knitted fabrics may be used to form a sandwich with wadding
to produce quilted fabrics. Complex multi-layer fabrics may be constructed
to give protection from a range of hazards.
Quilted Fabrics
Quilted fabrics are two or three layer fabrics with a layer of fibres
( batt or filler ) stitched or attached by adhesives to conventional fabrics.
The filler may be non-woven man-made fibres or natural materials such
as down, feathers, wool or cotton. Quilted fabrics tend to be used to
give thermal insulation in garments which are used at low temperatures.
They may also act as a protective layer of padding to protect against
impacts. Sometimes similar fabrics are constructed using polymer foam
in the sandwich.
